Stephanie Wolters

Stephanie’s research focuses on political and conflict dynamics in the Great Lakes region, foreign policy within the Great Lakes and Southern Africa and elites and political change. She is currently writing a book about regional foreign policy towards the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which will be published in the Insights series by the Brookings Press and Chatham House Press in 2020.

Stephanie has worked in over 30 African countries as a researcher specialising in conflict dynamics and political economy for organisations such as the World Bank, the UN, the International Finance Corporation, and the Economist Intelligence Unit. Originally a journalist, she was the Mail and Guardian’s Africa editor from 2006 – 2009 and the editor in chief of Radio Okapi from 2001 – 2003. Prior to that she was the DRC correspondent for the BBC, Reuters and the Economist.

She is also the Research and Editorial director of Okapi Consulting, an international organisation that runs peacebuilding media projects in conflict zones.

Stephanie holds an MA in African Studies from the Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies.
